Why do people always shop at the last moment, and wait in line like herds of animals on Boxing day?

Sales were already up 1+week before Christmas, and most items are still the same price on Boxing day. You go by the mall, or other retail outlets, and you see every parking space taken.The sheeps all cluster together, and the lineups are atrocious. I find it quite sad, and pathetic, the human race.
