How to check in/out of airport when traveling to another country?

I recently traveled to Canada and had to check out when I landed. Upon checking out, the staff asked me,' why are you coming to Canada?' To which i answered, 'im here for vacation. sightseeing and just exploring the country while im on my winter vacation from school' The staff rebutted saying that my response was invalid and that i cant only be here for vacation and asked if i was maybe visiting friends, family or coming for a business matter. I was told to think about why im entering another country by the staff and how i should give a proper response the next time i travel. I was there talking to the staff, trying to reiterate my reply for 15 minutes before he let me through i was confused to why i couldnt reply with im here on vacation only.

I always say "Just visiting" and it's never been a problem. The Canadians are sensitive about people bringing in things to sell or political stuff. A friend of mine was going to a conference there and she had handouts about her presentation. When they asked if she had any brochures, she said she had handout, and they searched her luggage. Just say you're visiting for pleasure.

When you pass through Immigration, you always have to state the purpose of your travel. A response such as vacation, business, etc is generally sufficient. They can ask just about whatever they want, although I've never encountered a problem like this or any other when going through Immigration. It's usually quick and easy.

Given you hide your identity here, there is no reason for anyone to believe you aren't just making this up like it sounds.

One word does. Vacation, or pleasure. Never say business. Unless on business. Some ask were you are staying. Give a address. Name. Any thing to declare. No. Unless in dout then ask. Check out here. Stop before the airport. Rent a box & leave all guns ammo knifes there. You can no longer check them outside the terminal. Next get in line. Run luggage threw detectors, Show security your ticket. Next verify your ticket check your checked bag. . Then go to security run carry on threw detector, pass security. Next go to your boarding area. May be 1 more security check there. Wait there till you can board your plane show passport. For most. Passport & long form for me. May need long form at other security. This is only because I am a resident here. Not tourist. & not citizen. Return get of plane. get luggage go get in fast lane. Have passport & resident card. Have him take your photo. look at your passport, look at resident card. Normally he says welcome back. Go to visa area. Have passport stamped. He looks at resident card. Says welcome back sir last time. Others may get ask were they are staying & such. But on return with a resident card drivers permit for here & all. They know I know were I am going & staying. Japan you can expect extra security & China is bad between planes. On checks. So depends on Country. Cambodia is very easy. Thailand about same as U.S. Vietnam can be a stickler on security checks. Bad if you come there from China first on a flight.

People from overseas have the same problem when coming to the USA.

You said "I'm here for vacation. sightseeing and just exploring the country while im on my winter vacation from school'" Maybe they thought from school you would not have the funds, plus you don't mention hen you travelled, but if over the Christmas period, they may have thought it odd that you weren't visiting family or friends.

Just fyi, this process is not called 'checking out'. You went through Immigration, or Passport Control. Checking IN at an airport is when you show that you have your ticket and get your seat allocation (if not already).

You encountered a twit. All you needed to say was "tourism".

Canadian immigration has a higher percentage of twits and a$$holes than any of the 25 other countries I've visited in my lifetime. Just leaving their dump of a country can be a pain.
