Was this a weird request?
Will be going on a school trip that is a week long. I asked the coordinator if I can be paired with a student from another class rather than someone I already know because I want to use the hotel time to relax, read, and work on assignments. I said that if I am with someone I know, I will probably talk for hours.

Not at all. You are who you are. If you don't have the self restraint to not stop talking to someone you like then I think it is very admirable of you to discipline yourself and to explore different avenues in life.
