What is the social and cultural meanings behind nike running shoes?

They were one of the first brands to widely advertise and became well know a few decades ago. These days some people have negative views toward them due to how the corporation has shown support, or lack of, for certain ideas and agendas. You can look up Nike controversy online and read more about why some people support the company and others won't have anything to do with a Nike product. Personally I don't find their shoes to be what I need for running, so I haven't worn any since some time in the 1990s (before I really knew anything much about running shoes).
