Why isn't a boxing ring round?

Because boxing "square" doesn't sound as good. And because there needs to be corners where the fighters can sit on the stool and get instructed by their corner in between rounds.

Because the first enclosed space introduced to boxing was in fact a ring. It was the Romans who introduced the ring. After all these years, the term ring has just stuck around. Saying boxing square just sounds dumb. At least "octagon" for UFC has some uniqueness to it.
