Believe it or not, the city we know as El Paso was not called that until 1859. Mail was coming there starting in 1854. There were settlers on that side of the river as far back as 1825 when it belonged to Mexico. It actually belonged to the New Mexico territory first, then was established by treaty as part of Texas in 1850, five years after Texas became a state.

Just go to the El Paso Texas county site and it should be on there. Each city has it's own website for information and tourism.
