How do snail shells get those swirls and spikes instead of just being blobs?

They were once cephalopods like squid. They had a shell then as well. They adapted multiple chambered shells to help them to swim. They grew out of it, and so they managed to grow a lung. Walk on land. And they just kept the shell, despite being a land-dwelling creature.

It's been awhile since I've messed in biology, but I think it has something to do with the reproductive organs of the creatures. But I think the math behind it is more fascinating. The more math and science you encounter, the more you run into the number 'e,' Euler's number. Its applications and manifestations are beautiful and often abstract. The logarithmic spiral is a shape that appears in nature, and is found in such places as shells, horns, tusks, sunflowers, and even spiral galaxies. Which of course, is totally random, accidental, and without purpose.😉
