The Irish border was more important than a united Ireland, is it now more important than Brexit?

The majority in Northern Ireland do not want a united Ireland so there is a border. The UK is not going to put in a hard border. Neither is the Irish Republic. So, until the fascist EU gets its army up and running what is it going to do about it?

Is the UK more important than Brexit? Maybe England should leave the Union and go its own way . It's looking as though the UK has had its day by now. Northern Ireland is essentially a colonial enclave of largely bigoted and regressive views. The Idea that England should be chained to that may become less appealing as time goes on .

The Irish border has been a compromise since ROI became independent, of course. It's still there even if there are currently no border posts and checks, and a majority north of the border are still determined to be British, and separate from the Republic. Of course the complete answer to the border is to make Ireland one independent nation and for it to remain in the EU. But those stubborn loyalists in the north will hear none of it. You simply can't say that 'the Irish border was more important than a united Ireland'. That doesn't even make sense, and neither does the notion that it might be 'more important' than Brexit. We are simply deadlocked on this, with the border and the vexed question of Ireland North and South being of huge trouble to the United Kingdom, as it always has been.

If there were no 'people of bad intent' a simple non military border could be installed and ignored by ordinary people. I don't see why one is needed as the Republic assumes that anyone born on the island of Ireland is Irish

There should be a referendum called on a United Ireland but with the UDA in government that will be blocked, time to get rid of the UDA/Tory axis of evil an get a new government in

No, but it’s a prominent part of the stupidity that is Brexit. Only 17% of people polled even know what the backstop is.

It is not important whatsoever. What is important is that we have a strong border for checking HUMAN arrivals from Ireland (north or south). Illegals have always used the Dublin route to slip into the UK.

Why does Ireland have to be United, when it never has been before? The only time it has been "united" is under foreign rule. Logically, that clam makes no more sense than demanding all of Britain needs to be one country and unlike Ireland it actually has all been one country in the past.

the question is somewhat confused there IS no Irish border - partly cos of the good friday agreement and partly cos both S and N ireland are in the EU the "no border" is very important to both N and S Ireland cos it effectively creates a federal ireland (separate but united) Problem NOW is the UK wants to leave the EU - and as a result there SHOULD be a border between N and S ireland as a result . but this would be an anathema to both sides of that border so NOW that border has become THE most important factor in brexit How do you keep both sides happy (with no border) but still fulfill the requirement to have customs controls between S Ireland (in the EU) and N Ireland (in the UK so outside the EU)? Only solution I can see is the NI separates from the UK and becomes a country in its own right (and part of the EU) and becomes the "united states of Ireland" - with the south Unfortunately this would be flatly rejected by the DUP that is the party keeping the cons in power
