Wood deck making terrible loud noises when I walked on it today.?
It is pretty cold right now (as most of you are aware) and when I left for work this morning and walked out on my deck it sounded like gunshots with every step I took. The deck is old and I am already concerned about its safety (landlord sucks and doesn't care to fix anything) so this made me more worried. Why was it making these noises and is this something that could be an issue later on?

Normal in the really cold weather for wooden decks to sound like that. Can be scary if one is not used to it. Sounds like the thing is about to fall apart.

It is frozen and you are cracking the ice when you walk on it.

Due to changes in temperature during cold weather, different parts of the deck expand and contract at different rates, making the popping sound you hear. There's no cause for worry, although if you notice any shifting of the boards or damage, you should have it inspected.
