Hard water is better for health, it contains minerals your body uses. It's worse for appliances though... Nitrates etc. from such as fertiliser are the harmful thing that can be in water, but that's totally separate from it being hard or soft.

I prefer hard water (ice) with my scotch and soda - but people back east are right now praying for soft water.
