You could use a wooden spoon if that's all you have.

A hand mixer or even a basic whisk will work just fine. Make sure there are no lumps and that the pan you're using has a lot of butter to prevent sticking. They look really cool while cooking but do deflate quickly once they're out of the oven, so if you want to show it off, make sure others are there when you take it out.
