Depends where you send them. Rural, private septic system, City, local sewer processing plant where the solids are separated and used as fertilizer and the remaining water dumped in a river or stream. Most rural systems need to have the "crap" removed after several years of build-up. You still have to pay, one or the other.

Most USA communities, towns, and cities have a sanitation treatment station that collects drain waste, including that from your lil potty. There is a lot of science that has gone into it. Up through the late 50's Francisco Bay was a rotten sludge pit. The cities of Berkley and Oakland took on most of the stench because the bay winds usually went Eastward, with SFO being on the south side and most of the shallow sludge was on the West and Northern corner of the back bay, by design. If you're on city water, it goes down to the sewer pipes and eventually makes its way to a sewer treatment plant where the water is treated and recycled. If you have a septic tank in your yard, then the solid wastes drop to the bottom of the tank and the liquid waste runs off through leaching (gravel) out to a field or somewhere. Septic tanks are usually out in the country, where there aren't city water lines. Septic tanks have to be pumped out every so often so they will be able to handle more sewage. It's very important that no sewage be allowed to get into lakes or streams, because those are sources for drinking water and people will become very ill if they drink contaminated water.

Here It goes into the holding tank. Or septic tank. Once a year that is pumped out as night soil. The grease trap emptied. From there it is aged a week or 2. Then put back on the fields to grow rice & vegetables. The grease goes to the candle factory. This is why you steam or cook all vegetables & avoid fresh salads here.
