Here in the UK because we start reception at age 4 the rule is +4 in each year. Reception age 4 Year 1+4= age 5 Year 2+4= age 6 Year 3 age 7?

They start at those ages but finish a year older: Year 4 age 8 & 9 Year 5 age 9 & 10 Year 6 age 10 & 11 Year 7 age 11 & 12 Year 8 age 12 & 13 Year 9 age 13 & 14 Year 10 age 14 & 15 Year 11 age 15 & 16 Year 12 age 16 & 17 Year 13 age 17 & 18

The plus 5 rule gives you the age you will become in each year. So if you are in year 9, your 14th birthday is some time between 1st September and 31st August either side of that school year. So most people start year 9 at age 13, unless they have a birthday between 1st September and the start of term.
