If I download a file that uses 20 gigs of space, when I install (it uses wifi and takes a very long time) will it use up another 20 gigs?

It can depend on what it is - but generally speaking, you need MORE space to actually install things, becase the install routine has compressed files, and they must be uncompressed to actually use them.

Probably more.

Yes, it might take up more space. For one, when the program is installing, it usually decompresses a lot of files/folders, so those take up more space. No one hear knows how much space it will end up taking since we have no idea what it is you downloaded.

Look at the recommendation of the maker of the file. Installation space on a typical system for typical use is given often.

It shouldn't.
