Do you drive slow in heavy rain?
Smokies Hiker
Of course I slow down in a heavy rain. Tires can "hydroplane" on standing water and cause the driver to lose control.
Jack
In light rain, driving right around the posted speed limit is usually sufficient, but in a real frog-strangler when visibility gets down around 20 feet, yeah, really slowly. Slowing down increases the time you have to react, but poor visibility puts everything a lot closer to you before you see it. You have to match your speed to the visibility, and to the traction you get. If you can only see 25 feet in front of you, drive at a speed that you'd want to be going at if you suddenly saw a brick wall only 25 feet in front of you, factoring for the ponding water.
Peter
Yes, I always slow down when there is heavy rain because I can't see clearly.
Percyqted
I drive at a speed appropriate to prevailing conditions. If that is not fast enough for you then you have a problem, not me.
Kathy
Yes I do
RICK
I drive slower then normal
Poppy
Slower? Yes, yes for safety.
Karen L
Yes. But not ridiculously slow.

Slow enough for safety. Heavy rain reduces visibility and increases stopping distance. Try to leave a safe margin in traffic.

In a HEAVY rain, I always slow down, even if it means driving under the posted speed limit for a while. Everybody should.. A heavy rain makes for a hazardous driving situation. The oil and water on the highway make the pavement very slick and difficult to stop if you have to. On-coming vehicles throw more water onto your windshield. Think about what could happen if you're traveling at a high rate of speed and you hit a low spot in the road that is completely full of water - especially if you're driving a small car. The rain can be so heavy and so fast that your wipers aren't able to clean it off the windshield, and so you can barely see in front of you. I've seen motorists pull off the highway, onto the shoulder, and come to a complete stop during a heavy rain. That's seems sensible, when it's hard to see what's in front of you. Whenever I see someone clipping along at 70 -75 mph and passing slower motorists in a heavy rain, I think: "There goes a fool".

If you don't slow down in heavy rain you're a fool. In some countries it's mandatory to slow down in any rain.
Lily
In fact, I only drive out for necessary if there is heavy rain. If you often drive out in heavy rain, you'd better go on a driving assistant system for your car, such as a car night vision system. I recently get one for my car from Lanmodo. To some extend, it helps me see better on the road. When there is heavy rain, you are advised not to drive out, if needed, make sure your safety.
Erik
I drive slower. There was some heavy rain last week, and I had trouble seeing out of my driver's side window and rear window.
Bertsta
I drive to the conditions. If I have good visibility and there is no standing water, I drive the same wet or dry.
regerugged
Yes and with the windshield wipers going.
Jake No Chat
Slower - yes. It is safer.

I try not to drive at all but when I do, yes. But everything is relative. Rain scares me more when other drivers are around because they are more unpredictable than the rain is, in the rain.
Kyle
yes. it can still obscure your vision to see things clearly. especially if it's at night. plus, if it gets flooded, you need to watch out for those as well.
