Altering seats in a motor home and kids carseats safe?

I have a 1979 motor home. The driver and passenger seats have low backs. Is it possible to safley replace them with seats with a higher back and head rest. I also would like to add a shoulder belt as it only has lap belts. Also the bench seats around the table also have seatbelts. Are these safe for securing passengers, and children's carseats?

Seats are seats and you can swap out high back for low backs as long as you use the same anchor points. Seat belts are more critical items and you may be able to install three point belts but it's wise to make sure the shoulder mount is bolted to a load bearing part of the frame or it'll just pull out in an a accident. Motor body fitters will be able to advise and supply rated belts.

It's easy enough to replace your front seats with ones that have a higher back and head rest, but shoulder belts are a different issue. Shoulder belts need a solid anchor point to be bolted down to, and I'm thinking your 40-year-old motor home doesn't have an effective attachment point. Seat belts in the dining area probably meet the standards of a vehicle that was manufactured 40 years ago. if you want something that meets current standards, you need to buy a current vehicle.

Visit or call any RV center (or their website) such as RV World and they can answer your questions. Replacement front seats are available. As for the bench seats around the table, in most states the seats must face forward or they aren't legal for securing a child seat.
