A name is not a tangible object. You can't "give" it to anyone. The old name ceases to exist. Or becomes the new name. Or whatever metaphysical way you want to describe it.

When you legally change your name, your original name stays on record. Even if you're given a whole new identity in some top secret witness protection program, there will always be a record of your original name. Nobody gets your previous name. Even if they have the same name as you, they still didn't get your name.
