Why is there so much traffic during the day mainly in big cities?
Been There, Done That.
People going to lunch, delivery people, tourists, drug dealers, people who work nights doing their shopping, Taxis, retired folks, under cover cops, and people who are just LOST.

Deliveries. Meetings. Visiting sites, customers. Staggered hours/shifts. Not everyone sits at a desk all day.

Cartoons are "funny" because they show reality. Driving in the city, in 1950, had problems -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdgVcGjzgR4 We have the same amounts of streets in the city. We have twice the number of people and cars, today versus 50 years ago. We have stretched "rush hour" traffic from one hour to all day, to handle the increased traffic. Which is why to see "a ton of traffic in the middle of a work day."

There are lots of people live and work in big cities and nearly all of them own cars. Besides, roads of cities are always not enough for cars and very crowded.

A good portion of it is due to the increased population caused by illegal immigrants. Driving near larger US cities was never as bad as it is today.
