3 prongs for sealed beam lamps not fitting in connector?

i just replaced the lamp assembly (H6054) on a 98 ford e350 and only managed to get the prongs half way in, though they still work. since i didnt bother to examine the way it looked like before, i dont remember what orientation the connector was in. is this normal or do i have to fix it?
