Sounds like you are thinking of becoming an agent to sell insurance. Your biggest problem is not what hours they work, but to (find) or get new business and make a commission. Insurance is not like working for a company that is open from X to X. Until you are established or keep customers who renew or buy new/more business may find that you are working more than 40 plus hours, just to make enough to survive.

An insurance agent is a representative of various insurance companies. The job of the agent is to try to sell their clients the best possible policy from one of the insurance companies that they have an agreement with. Since they are just an agent for these various companies, the agent can usually set their own hours of operation. Every insurance agent in my area works from about 8 or 9 am until about 5 or 6 pm. Most insurance companies have some kind of call center for after hour insurance questions or accident reporting. People working at these kinds of call centers would have regularly scheduled shift work hours. But, people working in call centers are usually not considered "agents". They just answer phones and take information for people who already have policies.

It's up to them and their firms to decide.

Totally depends. I've worked late into the night and have been called by clients at weird hours with weird issues... I've been on the job for 20 hours in a day and on weekends too...but that's pretty rare.
