How does credit card disputes work?

I signed up for a movie subscription a couple months back. I was never able to use the monthly service because of issues on their end. After doing more research, I found out that this company is notorious for doing this with majority of their subscribers and for also charging after the subscription was terminated. I tried to resolve the issue directly with them for at least a week and a half but to no avail. I ended up disputing their charges and blocking any transactions from them. I just want to know how exactly does a dispute work. Does my credit card company still provide funds to this company (just not directly from my pocket) or will my credit card company retrieve my payment from this company? I'd hate to think that companies like this can still make money with all these fraudulent transactions even with cancellations.

Your credit card company will not pay them. They will request from the subscription company proof that they were allowed to charge you. You can provide proof of cancellation as well. The credit card company will make a decision to refund your money or not.

You dispute it, they look into it and make their decision. But, you HAVE to make an honest attempt at resolving it first. The credit card will probably remove the charge. But not 6 months worth. The credit card company does a charge back. They don't pay it for you.
