Why are big box store nortorous for hiring callously mean employees?

Hopped a few around here, it was like a high school. Employees were disgruntled or callously mean. Most are verbally abusive and yell at you and play favourites. Actually had instances where employees would call me gay and bounce their hand across their chest and heckle and insult me, when I would send in an hr report, the workplace begin to get hostile and I started having issues with random employees apparently their friends I don't know. Employees there are lazy to the ones that they do not favor or are personal buddies with. This causes hard working good employees there to leave their job.
