I didn't get the job. Can I ask for feedback?
Judy
You can ask, but would be rare if they gave any

One time - when I was in college - I really, really, really wanted a specific job. I got a rejection letter. I wrote back, a short, very nice letter, explaining WHY I felt I would be a good fit for the company, how interested I was, how much I'd like to be considered if another position opened up, was there a specific reason I was not a good "fit" for the job. I got a phone call about 3 days later and was offered a BETTER job with the same company! They like the level of my interest.

You can always ask, it's up the company or person to decide if they want to spend the time doing it. It may just be that someone else had much better qualifications.

Likly not

They may give feedback but if they do it will probably be rubbish and generic i.e could have given more examples or something like that

Yes - you can ask for feedback

You "can," but I'd suggest that you don't. The likelihood of you getting a response back any way is very low. I work in HR. The "generic rejection" email you got was sent by their applicant tracking system. You've already been deactivated in their system for this job, probably along with at least a dozen others, and they are now busy with the chosen candidate.

No real harm in asking but if they were to give people genuine feedback then some people would get mad and every so often they might even if sued for discrimination or something - even if they weren't being discriminatory or doing anything wrong. So, net effect of this is they may simply refuse to give you feedback or give you feedback but it'll be so generic as to be useless (ie something like "didn't feel applicant was a good fit for the job").

You can ask I suggest you phone as they are more likely to tell you ( rather than write) feedback

Yes, you can ask, but you probably won't get it. You misinterpreted what they interview meant. They did give you feedback. That feedback was that you didn't get the job. Employers are very uncomfortable giving criticism because they fear they will get sued. A company can choose not to hire someone for any number of reasons. Some, obviously have to do with the candidate's ability to do the job. Others are very subjective and perfectly legal.

I wouldn't ask them.

You can ask, but the odds of you getting any useful feedback are low. Most companies will just give some generic and useless statement like "we just felt like another candidate was a better fit" out of fear of getting sued by someone who wants to make a discrimination case.

If they told you that you would get feedback then it might be worth contacting them again to follow up on it. They might be more likely to give feedback if you remind them they told you they would when you went for your interview.
