What does this poem mean? interpretations/analysis? JEWELS IN MY HAND I hold dead friends like jewels in my hand Watching their brilliance gleam against my palm Turquoise and emerald, jade, a golden band All ravages of time they can withstand Like talismans their grace keeps me from harm
I hold dead friends like jewels in my hand
I see them standing in some borderland
Their heads half-turned, waiting for my arm Turquoise and emerald, jade, a golden band I m not afraid they will misunderstand
My turning to them like a magic charm
I hold my dear friends like jewels in my hand Turquoise and emerald, jade, a golden band.

A golden band and rings with jewels is connotation for marriage and friendship, like he lost his wife with his friends. When he thinks of them he knows that they'll not misunderstand him because he can't help them; they won't think that he has magic that can resurrect them.

Friends lost through death acquire a very special status to us. We treat their memory like brilliant jewels in our hands. We forget any imperfections they had and their memory is treasured and never dims. We imagine them somewhere just out of reach, half turned towards us knowing they can depend on us to honour and cherish them.
